Former Senegal international Papa Bouba Diop has been confirmed dead.

Pape Diop died in Paris after enduring a long illness.

The former Senegal international had several spells across England, France, Greece Switzerland and home country Senegal.

He was one of the outstanding players for Senegal at the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Japan and Korea as he scored the only goal against then defending champions France in their first ever World Cup game.

They made history in that tournament by going far as the quarter finals, the highest finish by an African representative alongside Ghana.

He ended as his team’s best scorer of the tournament with three goals, having also scored twice against Uruguay. Diop played 63 times for Senegal scoring 11 goals.
